About sustainability

The Bank of Åland’s ambition is to be the preferred value-generating bank for ambitious people and companies that value relationships. We strive to run our business sustainably in the long term − financially as well as socially and environmentally. This requires us to be aware of how our operations and way of running our business affect individuals, society and the earth, now and in the future.

Ever since the Bank was founded in 1919, our commitment to social development has been an important philosophy. Contributing to the advancement of society, but also doing our part and leading by example to promote sound global development, are highly important to us.

Sustainability is an integral element of all our operations. By structuring our sustainability work, we can ensure that we focus on the right things, in the right way. To help us, we have external regulations and internal governance in the form of policy documents and guidelines. We structure our efforts by performing an annual materiality analysis, adopting a sustainability strategy that is updated every two years and establishing group-wide climate targets. We are guided by the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, with its 17 global goals and 169 targets. Our sustainability strategy has four areas of responsibility – responsible investments, responsible lending, social responsibility and environmental responsibility.
